Picked to finish first in the A-10 in 2012-13, the Hawks failed to live up to the hefty expectations thrust upon them following a breakout season in 2011-12. The Hawks season started out with a bang, as Saint Joseph's upset #20 Notre Dame in the second game of the season behind a gutsy performance from Langston Galloway, who had a tooth knocked out in the second half. That would be the highlight of a disappointing season, as the Hawks failed to mesh for the rest of the year and finished with an 18-14 record.
The Hawks enter this season with no more high expectations. Gone are leading scorer Carl Jones and big man C.J. Aiken. What remains is a hungry veteran core with some decent youngsters to surround them.
Saint Joseph's will look to guard Langston Galloway to lead the team in 2013-14. The Baton Rouge, LA, native comes off a somewhat disappointing season that saw him take a bit of a step back as his points per game fell to 13.8. Galloway will look to finish strong in his senior campaign, and prove that the smooth shooter in 2011-12 was not just an aberration, but the norm.
Joining Galloway at the guard position will be Chris Wilson. The junior is a much more natural point guard than Carl Jones. With Wilson to distribute the ball, the Hawks should have much better movement on the court this season, as he has had another season to grow as a player.
Down low, the Hawks will look to seniors Ronald Roberts, Jr. and Halil Kanacevic to lead Saint Joseph's in the paint. Roberts comes off a season in which he averaged 11.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and it's not a stretch to think the Bayonne, NJ, native could average a double-double in 2013-14. Kanacevic gives the Hawks a bit of a hybrid down low, as the 6'8" forward often displays point guard-like passing abilities. Kanacevic comes off a 2012-13 season that saw him average 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. If he can keep his composure on the court, which has been an issue at times, Kanacevic should be a key cog in the Hawks machine.
The Hawks also have a nice mix of youth on the roster this season, with freshman guard Kyle Molock, forward DeAndre Bembry, center Javon Baumann and sophomore forward Isaiah Miles.
With a slight mix-up of the roster for this season and no heavy expectations to weigh them down, the Hawks could be poised for a bounce back season this year. One thing is for sure, the road won't be easy, as the Hawks play in a tough A-10 with a respectable out of conference schedule as well.
