Dragons Extinguish Phoenix's Chances Of Winning

In the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, the 8 seeded Drexel Dragons were matched up with the 6 seeded Elon Phoenix.  Drexel came out victorious, with a final score of 71-64.  The Dragons are in the North division, along with Elon, Rutgers and Canisius.  The first round of games will take place today, with the consolation and division championship games being held tomorrow afternoon.  The North games are taking place in Piscataway, NJ, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center, formerly known as the RAC.
Things started out pretty well for the Dragons, who led 33-23 at the half.  Senior guard Chris Fouch led the Dragons in scoring, with 22 points, while junior guard Damion Lee had a terrific all-around performance, scoring 16 points while also securing 6 rebounds and 2 steals.  Junior forward Kazembe Abif led the Dragons in rebounding with 9 rebounds and also finished with 6 points. Senior forward Lucas Troutman led the Phoenix in scoring with 23 points.

The Dragons man-handled the Phoenix on the boards, out-rebounding Elon 39-24.  While they only shot 66% from the charity stripe, Drexel still attempted nearly 40 free throws, while Elon only managed to take 24 free throws themselves.  Winning the rebounding and free throw battles go a long way in coming out victorious.  While both teams struggled from the 3 point line, Drexel's aggressive offense getting to the basket as often as possible was a major difference maker in this game.

Now at 2-1 on the season, Drexel looks to keep advancing further in the tournament, as they face the winner of the Rutgers and Canisius game tomorrow at 7:30.  Stay tuned to our twitter account to see who Drexel ends up playing tomorrow evening.  If they win tomorrow night as well, then the Dragons would wind up heading to Madison Square Garden on November 27 to take on the winner of the West division (whom most likely will be Arizona).  It will be tough to win the entire tournament, with teams like Arizona and Duke in the field.  But we at the BSB are optimists, only three more games to win.

Next Game: Tuesday, November 19 vs Rutgers or Canisius (winner).
