Drexel Falls To Charleston In Low Scoring Affair

2/13/2014

Even after the season ending injury to highly skilled guard Damion Lee, Drexel still managed to put together a solid functioning offense.  However, the Dragons struggled to get anything going tonight, as neither team managed to reach the 50 point mark.  The Dragons came into tonight's game averaging over 70 points per game, but only mustered 46 against an incredibly tough Charleston defense.  In fact, Charleston has the 23rd ranked defense in the nation, holding opponents to just 62.3 points per game.  After watching Charleston in action though, the 23rd ranking may be a bit misleading.  Charleston plays at a very slow pace, as they are also ranked 324th in scoring at 63.7 points per game.  So they do have a good defense, but opponents get less opportunities to attack the defense because of the slow pace that is normally played.
Senior guard Frantz Massenat led all scorers with 16 points on 5-14 shooting and had 5 assists and 2 steals to go with it.  Dartaye Ruffin didn't finish the game with a single point, as he finished 0-3 from the field, but he did snare a team high 9 rebounds.  Ruffin provides the team with some physical play down low, but the Dragons need  him to step up just a little bit on offense.  He doesn't need to get a double-double every night, but something around 6 points per game can give their offense the boost it needs.  The Drexel offense only managed 3 assists the entire night.  That indicates limited ball movement on offense.  The Dragons are much better on offense when everybody is involved and passing to one another.  Obviously Allen, Fouch and Massenat are their most skilled scorers, but they need to make everybody around them better and distribute the ball more if they have a chance as turning this team around before the CAA tournament next month.

Canyon Barry led Charleston's offense with 10 points.  I bring Barry up not because of his performance tonight, but because he is the son of NBA legend Rick Barry.  He eve shoots his free throws under handed, just as Rick used to.  It's something you don't see every night and I am a fan of anyone who shoots their free throws under handed.  It worked for Barry too, as he went 5-7 from the line.

Next Game: Sunday, February 16 vs Hofstra 8pm
