Evan Mathis was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers and spent three seasons there. He then went on to play for the Bengals from 2008-2010. After signing a one year deal in 2011 with the Eagles, Mathis played well enough to reach a five year $25.5 million dollar contract before the 2012 season.
While guards are hard to rank because of the lack of traditional stats surrounding the position, Mathis was widely recognized as one of the best at his position these last few years. Pro Football Focus ranked Mathis as the best guard in football for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons. He was also ranked the 2nd best guard in 2014, which is quite impressive considering he missed 7 games.
Mathis is now an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign with any team in the NFL. There are no early leads on where he will sign, but some teams can be ruled out because of their lack of cap space. Mathis was spectacular during his tenure with the Eagles, and will be missed by the fans.
