Eagles Survive First Half Scare Against Jacksonville

The first half for Nick Foles and the birds was quite scary to those who follow the team closely.  After being declared favorites in the NFC East and possibly Super Bowl contenders all preseason, the Eagles came out and played like anything but so, falling behind 17-0 at the half.  The offense was offensive and the defense made the Jaguars look like the Broncos, as the Eagles turned the ball over three times and let up scores in three of the first five Jacksonville drives.

However, a combination of Chip Kelly's halftime speech and a halftime drink of Michael's Secret Stuff (Space Jam reference) brought the Eagles back from the dead.  The first drive of the second half resulted in a 49 yard rushing touchdown from newcomer Darren Sproles, bringing thr birds to within 10 points.  That drive set the tempo of the half, as the birds scored a touchdown on their next drive on a 25 yard pass to Zach Ertz.  The rest of the half saw Parkey hit field goals from 28 and 51 yards out, Maclin score on a 68 yard reception and Fletcher Cox run 17 yards for another touchdown on a fumble recovery.

As bad as the first half was, the second half showed how dangerous this Eagles team can actually be.  Foles started out especially slow, but finished with 322 yards passing for two touchdowns and one interception.  McCoy and Sproles rushed for 74 and 71 yards respectively, and eight different receivers caught passes from Foles today.  Maclin led the way for the pass catchers, finishing with 97 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.

The defense, awful in the first quarter, tightened up their game the rest of the way.  The Jaguars had a field goal blocked in the second quarter, which prevented a 20 point deficit for the birds.  Not only did they hold the Jaguars scoreless during the last three quarters, they also scored on a fumble recovery and looked scary in the process.

The Eagles that came to play in the second half needs to show up from the get go if they want to beat the Colts next Monday night.

Next Game: Monday September 15, @ Indianapolis Colts, 8:30 pm
