Flyers Fade In Shootout After Scoreless Regulation in St. Louis

4/1/2014

Not much action to report on in the first 60 minutes of this game. It was a defensive battle between the Flyers and the Western Conference-best St. Louis Blues. Ultimately the game came down to a shootout, not one of the Flyers' strong points. T.J. Oshie did his thing and helped the Blues pull past the Flyers 2-0 in the shootout. Considering the Blues are stacked with Olympians on the roster, taking one point in this game, and 3 points from the Blues this year, should be seen as an accomplishment.
Ray Emery saved 28 to earn his 16th career shutout, 2nd this season.

The Flyers are now 3-7 in shootouts, the Blues 9-3. It was apparent the Flyers needed to end the game in regulation if they wanted the 2 points, but luckily shootouts won't be an issue moving into the playoffs.

Along with Oshie, Olympian Kevin Shattenkirk scored the other goal in the shootout for St. Louis. Oshie was typical Oshieness, complete with a fancy deke to the left that Emery knew was coming, but couldn't quite react too. Shattenkirk practically just took a slapshot. This Blues team is very confident and poised to make a run in the West. Could this be their year?

It seemed like Michael Raffl had the best scoring chances for the Flyers tonight, but couldn't put the puck high enough to beat Ryan Miller. If he had been a bit earlier on any of his 3 or 4 chances it could have been a much different game.

Erik Gustafsson played in his first game since February 27th. He was paired with Luke Schenn. Kimmo Timonen was a scratch tonight with an upper body injury after taking a puck to the chin on Sunday.

With 7 games left, 6 more points will seal the playoffs for the Flyers. Next game is Thursday at home against the Blue Jackets, who need to be beaten back down before they start getting playoff hopes of their own.
