The Flyers will swap underperforming defenseman Nick Grossmann and the remainder of Chris Pronger's contract for Arizona Coyotes center Sam Gagner and a conditional 2016 or 2017 draft pick.
It is worth noting though, that the Flyers already have a logjam at center, so this trade may be part of something bigger to come...or they could just move Gagner to the wing, we'll see. He has played wing at times in his career.
Another option is to simply buyout Gagner right away. It would only cost the Flyers $633,000 against the cap to buyout Gagner's contract. Between Pronger and Grossmann they already got rid of $8.4 million worth of contract. Hextall is basically printing money at this point!
By taking on the remaining years of Chris Pronger's contract the Coyotes will be able to hit the cap floor. Before Pronger gets put on LTIR at the beginning of the year he carries a cap hit of almost $5 million dollars, but he is actually only owed $575,000 for the remaining 2 years.
Ron Hextall comes off looking like a genius with this trade. Now the Flyers can actually use Pronger's money to make offseason moves instead of having to play the LTIR game. Bravo, Hexy.
