La Salle Drops Up-and-Down Contest to Penn State

The Explorers traveled on out to State College, PA tonight, as they squared off with the Penn State Nittany Lions. It was a back-and-forth contest, with La Salle holding a small lead for a good portion of the game. The Explorers could never put much distance between themselves and the Nittany Lions, proving costly, as Penn State clawed back to win in the end by a score of 79-72.
La Salle and Penn State traded leads early, with the Explorers opening the widest lead of the half at 28-21 with 9 minutes remaining. The Nittany Lions would go on an 11-4 run from there to tie the game at 32-32 and the teams would continue to trade buckets, with the Explorers leading 42-40 at halftime.

The game would continue the same up-and-down tempo in the second act, with the two teams trading leads throughout. Penn State would gain a 58-56 lead on a Donovan Jack layup with just over 10 minutes remaining and would not relinquish that lead for the remainder of the contest, going on a 10-4 run to widen the gap to 69-60. With time winding down, the Explorers just could not find a groove, falling in the end by a score of 79-72.

The Explorers were led in the contest by guards Tyreek Duren and Tyrone Garland, who scored 16 and 18 points respectively. While Garland led La Salle in scoring on the evening, he wasn't exactly shooting the lights out, going just 6 for 18 from the field.

La Salle's big men each notched a double-double, with Jerrell Wright scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 boards and Steve Zack contributing 12 points and 10 rebounds. While the starters made solid contributions, the bench did little in the contest, combining for just 10 points.

Penn State had no need for a bench on the evening, as their starters carried the load, scoring 76 of the teams 79 points. Donovan Jack dropped 18 for the Nittany Lions, while Brandon Taylor, Tim Frazier and D.J. Newbill added 15 points apiece. Forward Ross Travis balanced out the Penn State scoring, contributing 13 points on the night.

The loss drops the Explorers to 2-2 on the young season and is a far cry from how many pictured the La Salle season getting under way. La Salle still looks to be searching for a leader to step up in the place of Ramon Galloway and take over games. In a season of high expectations, the Explorers will need to find that definitive leader, and fast.

Next up for La Salle is a matchup with Morgan State on November 22.
