A night after being embarrassed by the San Diego Padres at home, the Phillies bounced back to win and put themselves in a position to win the series. The Phillies received some stellar pitching and managed just enough at the plate to grab the 4 to 2 win in front of a sea of blue seats, as Citizens Bank Park was quite empty.
Cliff Lee made the start for the Phillies and was fantastic in the outing. Lee allowed only two runs on five hits, scattered across eight innings pitched. Lee struck out nine batters in the contest, as he allowed only one walk. The Padres struck first in the fifth on a solo home run by Tommy Medica, his first major league hit. The Phillies would tie things in the bottom of the frame before the Padres received another solo home run, this time by Jedd Gyorko to regain the lead.
That would be all for the Padres scoring, as Lee handed things over to Jonathan Papelbon after eight innings pitched. Papelbon recorded a perfect ninth inning, including two strikeouts, as he notched his 26th save of the season.
Trailing 1 to 0 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Phillies tied things up on a Freddy Galvis home run to left field, his sixth of the season. The Padres would regain the lead in the sixth, but the Phillies would tie things in the bottom of the frame yet again, as Jimmy Rollins hit his sixth home run of the season.
The Phillies would take the lead in the seventh, as Galvis led off the inning with a double. After a John Mayberry Jr. walk and a sacrifice by Lee to advance the runners, Cesar Hernandez grounded out to plate Galvis and give the Phillies the lead. The Phillies would tack on an insurance run in the eighth, on a Galvis sacrifice bunt to score Carlos Ruiz. The Phillies would hand things off to Papelbon and that would be all she wrote, as they topped the Padres 4 to 2.
Jimmy Rollins had a solid night at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. The standout on offense would be young Freddy Galvis however, as he went 3 for 3 on the evening with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Phillies will now finish off their series with the Padres at Citizens Bank Park. Roy Halladay will make the start, as he attempts to give the Phillies the series win.
