Cliff Lee made his first start of the spring, pitching two innings while allowing one run. Jake Diekman took the loss, throwing one inning, giving up 2 runs.
Martin pitched to four batters, recording zero outs before being lifted from the game. He will be evaluated tomorrow by a doctor.
The loss could be a big one for the Phillies, as they already had little depth in their starting rotation. With Martin out and Cole Hamels likely to open the season on the DL, the Phillies are down to Cliff Lee, A.J. Burnett, Kyle Kendrick and the artist formerly known as Fausto Carmona, Roberto Hernandez, as healthy starters.
Coming into camp it was presumed that Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez would compete for a spot in the rotation, but all indications from camp so far are that he sucks.
Jonathan Pettibone (Bonesaw) is behind schedule after receiving a cortisone shot 10 days ago, leaving B.J. Rosenberg, Jeff Manship, Sean O'Sullivan and David Buchanan as the remaining potential hole fillers in the rotation.
So yes, this season is off to the start most of us expected.
