The Phillies kicked off their series with the Marlins in front of approximately 10,000 senior citizens, picking up their 85th loss of the season. The Phillies saw what could possibly be the end of Roy Halladay's career, as the two-time Cy Young Award winner had his shortest outing of his career. The bullpen took over for Halladay, but the offense never showed up, as the Phillies fell 4 to 0.
Halladay made the start and only faced three batters before leaving with "arm fatigue." The right-hander was visibly laboring on the mound, as he turned bright red and failed to throw a pitch faster than 83 mph. Halladay walked two and recorded only one out before exiting the game, as he threw 16 pitches, only 5 for strikes.
Luis Garcia replaced Halladay and walked the first two batters he faced, bringing a run home for the Marlins, which was charged to Halladay's line. Garcia would throw two and two-thirds innings for the Phillies, allowing three hits and walking three.
Joe Savery was next up, tossing one and two-thirds of an inning of perfect ball before handing things over to Justin De Fratus who tossed one and one-third scoreless inning. Ethan Martin came on to toss a scoreless seventh, but things would not go as smoothly for the Phillies in the eighth, as B.J. Rosenberg allowed three runs while recording only one out. Cesar Jimenez would come on to notch the final two outs in the inning, but with no offensive support, the Phillies were doomed from the start.
The Phillies managed only four hits all game on their way to being shut out. Jimmy Rollins, Dom Brown, Darin Ruf and Roger Bernadina each recorded one hit for the Phillies, with Rollins being the only one to go for extra bases, as he smacked his 33rd double of the season.
The Phillies will face off against the Marlins again in game two of this series. Zach Miner will make the start for the Phillies, who will look to their bullpen to piece together another outing.
