"The Dog Standing in the Car"

Today's passenger just so happens to be in a category that I fall into. Yes, even the Broad Street Beat is not immune from committing acts worthy of a PATCO Pondering. So, with that said, lets dive into today's segment.

Today we will focus on The Dog Standing in the Car. This passenger is the one who will be standing but refuse to hold on to any handles to help maintain their balance. Their name derives from the fact that at all times they look like a dog trying to stand in the car as you whip a sharp turn. There are two types of The Dog Standing in the Car, the germaphobe and the show off. The germaphobe refuses to touch any handle on the mass transit system because, lets be honest, it's not like they've been cleaned in the last decade. Lucky to even be able to convince themselves to sit down on public transportation systems, this passenger (me) will attempt to master the art of cat-like balance on the occasion they don't get a seat. The show off seems to feel the need to convince their friends or the strangers around them that they require nothing to help steady them. You kind of hope this person falls just so you can laugh, but would feel much worse if the germaphobe did, as it would most likely send them into a frenzy of OCD behaviors.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of not being able to sit last week aboard the train after it arrived twenty minutes late. With passengers packed like sardines I kind of just hoped there would be no room for me to fall. I then spent the entire ride looking like an idiot as I stumbled back and forth (like a dog trying to stand in a car) in an attempt not to fall to the ground or have to touch the hand rail. Note, I was successful, but just barely. I almost gave in and used the hand rail after I came very close to falling.

So now you know, none of us are immune to becoming a PATCO Pondering, as I am The Dog Standing in the Car. So enjoy your commute and may there always be a seat available for you.

Have a PATCO Pondering? Let us know and we'll write about it.
