The Phillies designated Laynce Nix for assignment this afternoon in order to make room on the roster for Domonic Brown, who returns from the DL after suffering a concussion. The move continues the Phillies attempts to get younger and look toward the future, as it allows Darin Ruf to remain with the big club. Ruf is well deserving of his spot, as he is hitting .299 and is currently on a 32 game streak of getting on base.
The move also marks the Phillies finally admitting to the failure of the Laynce Nix experiment when they signed him to his two year deal. Nix was hitting only .180 this season with two home runs, in 128 at-bats.
Adding to the sting of Nix's terrible play this season were the solid numbers Nate Schierholtz has posted while playing for tonight's Phillies opponent, the Cubs. With the need for only one extra left handed outfielder in the offseason, the Phillies let Schierholtz walk. This season Schierholtz is hitting .268, with 14 home runs and 43 RBI's.
While it does sting to have seen Schierholtz producing this season, we can now at least rejoice in one thing, Laynce Nix is gone.
