The Phillies dropped an epic marathon of a game last night/this morning to the D-Backs by a score of 12 to 7 in 18 innings. Both teams were running out of players and unfortunately for the Phillies, Pistachio Girl wasn't available to pitch, so they turned to Casper Wells, who was no Wilson Valdez on the mound, and picked up the loss.
It was an odd game from the get go, as Ethan Martin lasted only two-thirds of an inning in his start, allowing three runs. Luis Garcia tossed three and a one-third innings in relief, allowing another two runs before handing things over to Zach Miner, who allowed two runs as well. The Phillies bullpen then pieced together scoreless frames before today's scheduled starter, Tyler Cloyd entered the game in the twelfth. Cloyd tossed five scoreless before handing things over to B.J. Rosenberg, who threw a scoreless seventeenth. Out of pitchers, the Phillies turned to Casper Wells to pitch in the eighteenth. Wells retired the first two batters in the inning before all hell broke loose. In the end, Wells would not record another out, allowing five runs to the D-Backs and taking the loss. John McDonald came on to replace Wells, and after allowing one inherited runner to score, was finally able to finish out the inning.
Down 6 to 0, the Phillies got on the board in the fifth on a Carlos Ruiz solo home run, his fourth of the season. The Phillies would give one back in the sixth before scoring two in the bottom half of the frame, as Roger Bernadina smacked a home run to lead off the inning and Jimmy Rollins scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. The Phillies scored four in the eighth to tie the game, as Chase Utley hit a sacrifice fly to score Bernadina. Ruiz would single home another run, before Darin Ruf smashed his eleventh home run of the season, a two run shot, to tie the game. After tying things late every Phillies fan was left with that "holy crap are we going to win this on a walk off for the fourth game straight?" It would not come to fruition, as the offense went to bed around the same time many fans did and the Citizens Bank Park Liberty Bell struck midnight, or 2 a.m. on the Phillies.
The game took a total of 7 hours and 6 minutes to complete, as the Phillies also lost Dom Brown in the process. The All Star left the game in the third with a bruised right Achilles.
With all pitchers used up in the ridiculous game, including Sunday's scheduled starter, Tyler Cloyd, Roy Halladay will make his return to the majors earlier than expected, as he makes the start for the Phillies.
