The Phillies jumped out to an early lead, courtesy of back-to-back home runs from Darin Ruf and Delmon Young in the second inning. The Braves got one run back in the third before erupting for five runs in the fifth to jump to a comfortable 6 to 2 lead. The Phillies narrowed the gap in the sixth when Chase Utley hit a solo home run, his fifteenth of the season. Cody Asche grounded out to bring home another run and get the Phillies within two but that would be all the Phillies could muster. The Phillies managed only six hits on the evening, with three of them being solo home runs. Delmon Young went 3 for 4, as he fell a triple short of the cycle, his only out coming on a blown call by the umps, which resulted in Charlie Manuel and Jimmy Rollins being ejected.
The Phillies will face off with the Braves again tomorrow at 4:05. John Lannan will face Brandon Beachy in game two of this series.
