Phillies Fall to Streaking Nationals

The Phillies were blown out by the Nationals by a score of 6 to 1. Yes folks, the Nationals are going streaking, through the quad and into the gymnasium, as they won their season-best seventh straight game. The win moved the Nationals to 4 1/2 games back of the Reds in the wild card race, but don't go thinking they're actual playoff contenders, because the Reds will have to pretty much forfeit the rest of their games to not get that playoff berth.
Kyle Kendrick took to the mound for the Phillies and continued to be simply atrocious in the second half of the season. Kendrick pitched only four and one-third innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Cesar Jimenez came on to record the second out of the inning before handing things off to Luis Garcia who allowed two runs to score, both charged to Kendrick's line, before stopping the bleeding.

Zach Miner would toss a scoreless sixth and seventh, but with a sputtering offense, it made no difference. Miner handed things over to Joe Savery for the eighth, as Savery allowed one hit, while recording one strikeout in the scoreless frame.

The offense was essentially non-existent for the Phillies on the evening, as they scored only one run on eight hits. The run came in the first inning, courtesy of a Carlos Ruiz RBI single to plate Cesar Hernandez, but that would be all for the Phillies offense.

Somewhat of a silver lining, Ruiz continued to heat up, as he went 2 for 4 at the plate, collecting his 31st RBI of the season.

The Phillies will face the Nationals in game two of this series, as they look to reassure the Nats that they're not playoff contenders. Cole Hamels will take the hill for the Phillies, as he faces off against Gio Gonzalez.
