A three-run fifth would power the Nationals to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies, completing Washington's sweep and sending Philadelphia to their sixth straight loss.
To say the Phillies' play of late has been miserable would be an understatement. Since May 4, the Phillies are just 9-20 and now sit 10 games below the .500 mark for the season.
Washington would take that run back immediately, however, as Kyle Kendrick allowed an RBI single to Ryan Zimmerman in the bottom of the frame.
Kendrick would settle in from there. Until the fifth inning at least.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Kendrick would allow an RBI single to former Phillie Jayson Werth to give Washington the lead before surrendering a two-run home run to Adam LaRoche to put the Nationals ahead 4-1.
Kendrick would finish the game having tossed seven innings, as he allowed four runs, six hits and five walks.
Despite Kendrick's struggles with command, he was able to keep the Phillies in position to win the game. If only the offense had shown up.
John Mayberry Jr. would hit a solo home run in the seventh to pull the Phillies within two, but the offense would show no other signs of life, as the Phillies lost 4-2.
Cole Hamels will look to end the Phillies' skid on Friday night, as he faces off against Johnny Cueto and the Reds.
