The Phillies would respond in the ninth, pulling to within one again on an RBI single by Jimmy Rollins and later putting the tying run in scoring position before eventually falling 5-4.
The Phillies would rally for three runs in the seventh, lifting Hernandez for pinch-hitter Tony Gwynn Jr. The move would pay off, as Gwynn reached on a fielding error to score Domonic Brown and Carlos Ruiz, pulling the Phillies within 4-3.
The Phillies would threaten again in the eighth, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but would be unable to bring the runners home.
After the D-backs tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Phillies entered the ninth trailing by two. Jimmy Rollins would single home Ben Revere to pull the Phillies within one, and steal second to give the team a runner in scoring position.
The pressure would fall on John Mayberry Jr., who had replaced Ryan Howard an inning earlier as a pinch-runner.
Mayberry would strikeout for the final out of the game, as the Phillies' rally fell short in the 5-4 loss.
Cliff Lee will now attempt to get the Phillies back on track, as the left-hander takes the mound Saturday night against the D-backs.
