The Phillies added some pitching depth on Thursday, signing right-hander Chad Billingsley to a one-year, $1.5 million deal, which includes performance bonuses. The deal comes as a low risk, high reward signing for the club. Billingsley, 30, has compiled an 81-61 record with a 3.65 ERA in his big league career, but did not appear in a Major League game in 2014 and pitched just 12 big league innings in 2013. |
"As has been the case throughout this offseason, we have attempted to create as much starting pitching depth as possible at both the major and minor league levels," Phillies Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a press release. "Given Chad's track record, we feel he is an excellent candidate to bounce back as a productive starting pitcher."
Left-hander Cesar Jimenez was designated for assignment to make room for Billingsley on the 40-man roster.
