The Phillies completed the sweep against the division-leading Braves this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Behind some stellar pitching and just enough offensive support, the Phillies swept the Braves out of Philadelphia by a score of 3 to 2.
Cole Hamels made the start for the Phillies and was spectacular, only allowing two hits all game. Unfortunately both hits were monster home runs by Evan Gattis, the first of which cleared the batters eye in center field, landing on Ashburn Alley. Hamels would toss eight innings in all, allowing only two runs, while striking out nine and walking two. After the Phillies regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth, B.J. Rosenberg came on to notch the save for the Phillies.
The Phillies jumped out to an early 2 to 0 lead in the first, as Chase Utley doubled home Jimmy Rollins. Darin Ruf followed that with a single to plate Utley and stake Hamels an early lead. Ruf would prove to be the hero of the contest, as with the score tied 2 to 2 in the eighth, he crushed a solo shot to right field to give the Phillies the lead.
Ruf and Utley both had solid afternoons at the plate, as they each went 2 for 4. Ruf drove in two in the game and hit a solo home run for his 13th of the season.
The Phillies will have Monday off before the Padres come to town. Tyler Cloyd will make the start for the Phillies.
