A solid start by former Pirate A.J. Burnett was wasted on Sunday afternoon, as the Phillies fell to the Pirates 6-2. The loss completed the Pirates’ sweep of the Phillies, as Philadelphia fell to just 1-5 so far on this road trip.
The Pirates wouldn’t dwell on the defensive miscue long, however, as Russell Martin doubled home two runs in the bottom of the first to give the Pirates the lead, one they would not relinquish.
The Phillies would pull within one in the seventh, as Byrd smacked his 18th home run of the season, a solo shot to left.
The Phillies would get no closer, however, as the bullpen was tagged for three runs in the eighth on their way to a 6-2 loss.
Having now lost 13 of their past 16 games, the Phillies are assured to be sellers at the deadline. But will they be able to get anything of value in return for their trade pieces?
