The Phillies wasted little time taking control Thursday afternoon, scoring two first inning runs against former Phillie Vance Worley and the Pirates. They would remain in control from there, picking up a 4-2 win to salvage a split in the four-game series with Pittsburgh. Ben Revere would start off the bottom of the first by reaching on an error by Neil Walker. The Phillies would capitalize from there as Freddy Galvis and Ryan Howard each singled to load the bases before Cesar Hernandez drew a walk to bring Revere around to score. |
The Phillies would add a run in the third on a Pirates error and one more in the fifth when Ryan Howard took the first pitch of the inning deep for his seventh home run of the season.
Four runs would be more than enough as far as Phillies starter Aaron Harang was concerned, as he cruised through eight scoreless innings, allowing just five hits.
Ken Giles would come on in the ninth for the Phillies, and would give fans cause for concern, however, allowing a single to lead off the inning before surrendering an RBI double two batters later. Giles would be lifted after that, recording just one out, before Jonathan Papelbon came on to clean things up.
Papelbon would allow one run that was charged to Giles' line before recording the final two outs of the game, as the Phillies picked up just their 13th win of the season.
Notes: Freddy Galvis would go 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and a walk on the afternoon to raise his average to .353. Ryan Howard would put together a nice afternoon as well, going 3-for-4 at the plate and recording his seventh home run of the season.
Up next: The Phillies will open a three-game set against the Diamondbacks Friday night. Chad Billingsley will make the start for the Phillies.
