Philly College Football Review: Week 2

Temple 13            Houston 22

Temple dropped its first game in American Athletic Conference play to Houston by a score of 22-13 at Lincoln Financial Field. A week after being handled relatively easily by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Owls returned to competition more their level as they faced off with the Cougars.
Both squads struggled mightily in the red-zone throughout the game. Temple grabbed a 6 to 3 lead in the first when Kenneth Harper punched the ball home from one yard out. The extra point was missed, as kicking continued to be problematic for the Owls. Harper would run for another touchdown just before the half to give the Owls a 13 to 9 lead heading to the locker room. Temple would fail to score in the second half, as Houston kicked its way to victory, totaling five field goals in all, before adding a touchdown in the final minutes of the contest. The loss drops the Owls to 0-2 on the young season under new head coach Matt Rhule.

The Owls will return to competition on Saturday, as they face the Fordham Rams.

Villanova 24            Fordham 27

Villanova visited Fordham this week, as they dropped a close one to the Rams. In a back-and-forth contest, Fordham grabbed a lead in the fourth quarter and held on to move to 2-0 on the season and drop the Wildcats to 0-2.

The score was knotted at 7-7 after one quarter of play thanks to a John Robertson 5-yard rushing touchdown. Fordham would regain the lead in the second before the Wildcats scored two touchdowns, one on a Robertson run and the other on an interception that Jerry Miles took 46 yards to the house.

Villanova would add a field goal early in the third to extend their lead to 24-17, but the Rams would go on to score ten unanswered points as they escaped with the victory. Sloppy play definitely had its hand in the Wildcats loss, as they turned the ball over five times in the contest.

Villanova will return to action in two weeks when they meet up with Stony Brook at home.
