Brayden Schenn put the Flyers up 1-0 a minute into the game, but the Flyers still trailed at the end of the first 2-1, thanks to Nashville goals by Eric Nystrom and veteran David Legwand, who was the first ever draft pick by the Predators. You know who was #1 that year though? (1998) Vinny Lecavalier.
The seldom seen Meszaros goal tied it up 2-2 with just 3.6 seconds left in the second period. Weber scored on the power play in the third to put Nashville up 3-2. It could have ended that way, but the Flyers kind of have a thing for coming back from deficits in the third period this season. Wayne Simmonds stepped up this time and scored on a 6-on-4 with 1:24 left to send it to OT.
The 5 minutes of 4 on 4 settled nothing, and since the NHL won't adopt my idea of another 5 minute OT of 3 on 3 hockey, a shoot-out it was. It took 7 rounds to end this thing. Brayden Schenn and Couturier scored for the Flyers. On Nashville's side Matt Cullen, Louis C.K. doppelganger Ryan Ellis and Roman Josi scored, Josi's being the gamewinner.
The Predators had Seth Jones, #4 overall draft pick this year, shooting 3rd in the shootout. Jones is a defenseman, as is Josi, so it really speaks to how the Predators are build around defense. Their offense is nowhere near on par with their D yet, but they're a move away from being a playoff team again. This is the last time we'll see them this year though, so for now they're irrelevant.
The Flyers take on the Islanders at home Saturday night then away on Monday at 1 pm, which is a real pain for poor bastards like us at the BSB who have to go into work on Monday. If you have MLK Day off cherish it.
