The Phillies have reportedly selected the successor to Ruben Amaro Jr. as general manager. As first reported by Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe, the Phillies will name Angels Assistant General Manager Matt Klentak as their next GM. The organization has yet to confirm the reports, but Todd Zolecki of MLB.com and CSN's Jim Salisbury have confirmed the report with their sources. |
Klentak has experience working with the Phillies' new President Andy MacPhail, having worked with MacPhail while in MLB's Labor Relations Department before being hired by him in 2008 as director of baseball operations for the Baltimore Orioles.
Klentak would move to the Angels in 2011, taking on the role of assistant general manager and would earn quite a bit of respect from those in the league.
Now, he finds himself taking the reins of a rebuilding effort for the Phillies at the young age of 35.
With an analytics background as well as traditional baseball knowledge, Klentak could be just the man the Phillies need to restore the franchise to the heights it reached from 2007-2011.
In the meantime, Amaro, the man Klentak replaces, could reportedly be named first base coach of the Red Sox.
