Saint Joseph’s Falls in Overtime to St. Bonaventure

Everybody has their weaknesses.

For Superman it’s kryptonite. Ace Ventura was afraid of bats. Saint Joseph’s can’t shoot free throws.

On Saturday night, Saint Joseph’s fell victim to their weakness yet again.

In a back-and-forth game, the Hawks would go just 8-for-17 from the charity stripe on their way to a 70-60 overtime loss to St. Bonaventure.

“When you now go 7-for-14 and 8-for-17 [from the free throw line the last two games], that’s not concerning, that’s just flat out embarrassing,” Saint Joseph’s Coach Phil Martelli said.

The Hawks would get off to a hot start, taking a 20-13 lead over the Bonnies behind eight early points from Chris Wilson.

The Bonnies would respond with a 13-2 run, however, taking a 26-22 lead over Saint Joseph’s as the Hawks turned the ball over eight times.

Saint Joseph’s would close the gap, heading to the half down just 30-29 before the two teams really began to trade blows in the second half.

The Hawks and Bonnies would continue to trade jabs, with the lead changing six times in the second half, as the game came down to the wire.

Wilson would make a layup with 7:27 remaining in regulation to put the Hawks up 50-48, but Saint Joseph’s would go ice cold from the field from there.

DeAndre’ Bembry would sink two free throws with 3:51 remaining to knot the game at 52-52, but both teams would fail to score for the remainder of regulation. Bembry would have two separate opportunities to give the Hawks the lead from the charity stripe in the final 10 seconds, but would miss both free throws, keeping the game tied and forcing overtime.

It would be all St. Bonaventure in overtime, as the Bonnies steadily grew their lead on the way to a 70-60 win over Saint Joseph’s.

“We just weren’t there,” Martelli said. “We just had 20 turnovers in the half court in a home game. Think about those numbers, 20 turnovers, 8-for-17 from the foul line, 11 turnovers from your backcourt.”

Wilson would lead the way for the Hawks in the loss, tallying 20 points and nine rebounds, while Bembry finished with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

“It (20 points) doesn’t matter when you lose. It’s all about the win to tell you the truth,” Wilson said. “Point guard, senior, captain, it’s just all about winning. I’ve got four games left, I’m trying to win games. That’s all that matters to me.”

In the end, a familiar foe would get the best of Saint Joseph’s yet again, as their failure to sink free throws came back to haunt the Hawks in their 15th loss of the season.

“I’m disappointed for them because they were ordinary. Ordinary guys would say ‘man we really played hard…’ That’s what an ordinary guy does. That’s not what a champion does, and we ask them to be champions on and off the court,” Martelli said. “Tonight we weren’t there…But we’re in it together. It’s not me. It’s not them. It’s us.”
