The Sixers (3-2) welcomed the Cavaliers into the Wells Fargo Center Friday night hoping to win after losing back to back games. But this game was not just any other game for Philadelphia fans. No, it was something much more. It was the return of Andrew Bynum. And the fans couldn't be happier as their team spoiled Bynum's first trip back to Philly.
Bynum did not play a single minute after being traded to the 76ers last year with lingering injuries, but the worst part was that it seemed Bynum did not care to get healthy, he was happy just to sit on the bench. To make it worse, after Bynum signed with the Cleveland for this season, he miraculously was ready for the first game of the season. Sixers fans were just as excited to heckle Bynum Friday night as they were to see their rookie sensation. And they did boo him when he stepped onto the court. He was given the ol' Philly Welcome Home Party, and the crowd was relentless with their treatment of Bynum. Of course we at the BSB were more than happy to join in. But enough of Bynum, there's a game to cover.
The 76ers came out with cold shooting, only scoring 14 in the 1st quarter, while allowing Cleveland to double their score. Just when it looked like another rout , Philadelphia picked up their all around play in the 2nd quarter and whipped Cleveland in the 2nd quarter. They fought their way back in it and took the lead off of a MCW three-pointer with 2:06 left in the half. Although they had two shots from the foul line, the Sixers were able to attack the basket and score in the paint. Philadelphia went into the half with the lead, 44-42. The Cavs struggled from the floor in the 1st half, shooting 34%, while the Sixers shot a very nice 48.7%. Tony Wroten was a difference-maker off the bench, scoring 13 points in the half. The Cavs dominated the offensive boards with 10 rebounds, and Dion Waiters and CJ Miles led their team at the half scoring 10 points each.
The Sixers continued their solid play to start the 3rd as they spread around the scoring and held the lead. Tristan Thompson continued to clean both the offensive and defensive boards for the Cavs, but they could not find their shots as the Sixers played active defense. Philadelphia stretched their lead to double digits mid way through the quarter. With continued great offensive play by Wroten and Evan Turner as well as good team defense, the Sixers kept their lead secure for the remainder of the game and to win this one 94-79.
Evan Turner continues his excellent start to the season as he completed a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. Thad Young picked up his play after two poor performances scoring 16 off of proficient shooting and collecting 8 boards. Spencer Hawes had a quite game offensively but had 6 monster blocks to go with his 7 rebounds. Both James Anderson and Carter-Williams added 11 points as MCW also dished out 6 assists and secured 9 rebounds. Wroten continued his solid contributions off the bench with 18 points and 4 rebounds and assists. Philadelphia had 17 turnovers in the win, a number they still would like to cut down.
Andrew Bynum played 18 minutes off the bench in his return, scoring 4 points and collecting 5 rebounds. Thompson had a huge game on the glass, with 16 total rebounds (9 offensive) to go with 13 points and 2 blocks. Kyrie Irving had a quiet game, only scoring 10 and Waiters 18 and 6 assists. Overall, the Cavs were really bothered by the Sixers as they only hit 33% of their shots.
The 76ers will look to beat the Cavs again in the second game of this back-to-back in Cleveland on Saturday.
