Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we're back with another exciting offseason report for one of your Top 10 favorite Philadelphia professional football teams, the Philadelphia Soul. In the last report, we covered it all; puns, stats, rosters, general knowledge, you name it. But then one of my readers (I know, I'm pretty surprised that people have been reading this too) asked me why Dan Raudabaugh was listed as suspended this season. I thought it was a great question to help not only deepen my understanding of the Arena Football League, but to also help make this column a lot more thought provoking down the road.
Teams in the AFL use the league suspension list as a means of adding other players to their roster while facing uncertainty of some of their players' future career paths. The league suspension list is pretty flexible. If a player is on the list on Friday morning, they can be activated that same day and play a game in the same night if the coach chooses to do so. It's not so much of a suspension as much as it is an additional roster. Kind of similar to the inactive players on an NBA team; they are still part of the team, but cannot participate if they are on that list.
Currently, there are five men on the Philadelphia Soul league suspended roster: QB Dan Raudabaugh, RB Derrick Ross, DB Rayshaun Kizer, DL Bryan Robinson, and DB LaRico Stevenson. After taking the time to fully understand what league suspensions are, I fully expect most of these guys, if not all of them to return to the Soul for this upcoming season. Derrick Ross is one of the league's all time greatest backs, so having him return will keep the Soul at the top of the league in terms of running the ball. Raudabaugh is an experienced QB who has been to 2 Arena Bowls, so that will also pay big dividends to the Soul if he returns. All three of the defenders were big parts of the great 2013 defensive unit for the Soul. The season gets under way in just about two months. With the roster they have, plus these five men on the league suspension list, I expect nothing less than a Division Title and hopefully an Arena Bowl title.
