On Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center, Temple began its quest to prove that the Selection Committee was sorely mistaken when it chose to include teams such as UCLA, Texas and Indiana rather than the Owls.
Senior Will Cummings would shine for Temple in its first round NIT matchup with Bucknell, scoring 30 points to lead the Owls to a 73-67 win over the Bison, and continue their quest to prove they belonged in the field of 68.
The Bison would respond with a big run of their own, however, taking a 23-18 lead with 8:32 remaining in the half. The two teams would continue to trade shots for the remainder of the half, heading to the locker room knotted at 35-35.
The Owls would begin to take control in the second half, going up by as much as eight, but would be unable to keep the Bison at a comfortable distance.
In the end, Cummings would help will the Owls to a 73-67 win, scoring 30 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field and 9-for-9 shooting from the foul line, while also grabbing seven rebounds to extend his Temple career by at least one more game.
The Owls will face off against George Washington in the second round of the NIT at the Liacouras Center on Sunday at 11 a.m.
