The 76ers defended their home court against the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night. After 3 off days, Brett Brown and crew was able to and end their 4 game skid despite a horrid 24 turnovers. The Bobcats bested the Sixers in Charlotte 105-88 in their first matchup, but the Sixers (13-25) pulled this one on a game-winning three from Thaddeus Young.
The Sixers turned the ball over an unacceptable 9 times in opening period and found themselves stuck at 18 points for 3 minutes. This allowed Charlotte to build a small lead but they led by only 3 after the first quarter.
Led by their reserves, the Sixers scored 13 unanswered points as part of a larger 17-2 run mid-way through the 2nd quarter to regain control. The 76ers expanded their lead to 10 after a 3-pointer by Carter-Williams with 3:31 left in the half. The Sixers outscored their opponent 29-18 in the 2nd quarter and were up 53-45 at halftime. Big Al Jefferson led the Bobcats with 14 points after 2 quarters played, while Hawes and MCW both had 12 for Philadelphia. Despite a sloppy first half with 14 turnovers, the Sixers made up for it by shooting 55% FG.
Philadelphia continued to turn the ball over in the 3rd quarter, giving the Bobcats life. Charlotte shot only 36.4% after 3 quarters but stayed in it because of the opportunities they received from Philly's turnovers. At the start of the 4th, the Sixers only led by 4; 72-68.
Tony Wroten committed 3 more turnovers quickly to start the 4th and help Bobcats take their first lead since early in the 2nd quarter. After another make by Jefferson, Brett Brown called a much needed timeout with his team suddenly down by 3. After closely trailing, Turner would help Philly regain the lead with a layup but then give it right back up after a turnover led to a breakaway. Hawes hit a big three, his 3rd of the game, to put the Sixers up by 2 with 2:41 left on the clock. WIth less than a minute left, Kemba Walker hit the jumper coming off a screen to lock it up at 92 with :15 seconds left. But the Sixers wouldn't settle for overtime. With their their last possession, Carter-Williams found Thad Young at the top of their 3 point arc and knocked it down with only :03 remaining. Walker would be unable to answer back at the buzzer. The Sixers won at home 95-92.
Philly finished shooting 51% for the game and hit 6 of 15 from downtown. Young scored 11 points, including the game-winning three, and secured 5 boards adding 2 steals defensively. Evan Turner led his team with 23 points after a strong 4th quarter. Turner also recorded 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Hawes stuffed his stat sheet, grabbing 14 rebounds to go with 7 assists, 17 points, and a blocked shot. Carter-Williams had an impressive overall game finishing with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 dimes. The 76ers won the rebounding battle, 50-42, for the first time in 4 games, resulting in their first win in 4 games.
Kemba Walker scored 26 for Charlotte while also adding 8 assists and 2 steals. Al Jefferson ended with 24 points, 8 boards and 4 assists but missed some shots down the stretch when the Bobcats could have pulled away. Ramon Sessions scored 11 points off the bench. Charlotte barely shot 40% for the game but only committed 13 turnovers.
The Heat (27-11) arrive in Philadelphia for a rematch of the Sixers season-opener on Friday. The Sixers surprised the league with a win over the defending champs with a phenomenal debut by MCW. Miami has lost 3 straight and will be looking for someone to take it out on.
