Union Season Comes to a Disappointing End

Everything was on the line for the Union in today's match against Sporting Kansas City at PPL Park. Entering the day just one point out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the Union would need many things to go their way, but first priority would be securing a win. After tying things on a late goal, the Union saw their season come to an unceremonious end on a stoppage time goal giving Sporting the 2-1 win.

Sporting peppered the net early and often as the Union looked flat for much of the game, but a few strong saves by Zac MacMath kept the Union in the contest. Neither team found the net in the first half, heading to the locker room knotted at 0-0 and leaving 45 minutes for the Union to salvage an up-and-down season.

It wouldn't take long for Sporting to find the net in the second half, as Graham Zusi put the ball past MacMath with his head on a ball in the box in the 47th minute of play. With their season winding down, the Union turned things on in the final minutes of play. Jack McInerney placed one past the keeper in the 88th minute, but the Union would have to hustle to try and find the net one more time.

It wasn't meant to be, as Lawrence Olum found the back of the net for Sporting in the second minute of stoppage time to end the Union's playoff hopes and their season.

The Union will now head into the offseason looking to rearrange things over the winter in preparation for next season.
