Having the veteran second baseman hit the disabled list will help the Phillies in more ways than one. In addition to allowing Cesar Hernandez to get more playing time and develop, Utley's time missed could help the Phillies financially.
Utley has a $15 million club option for 2016, which will automatically vest should he reach 500 plate appearances this season. He is already around the halfway point to having that option vest, compiling 249 plate appearances so far this season.
With the type of season Utley is having, coupled with his injury history, it could mean the second baseman is on the last legs of his career.
