Following Tuesday's 11-6 win over the Yankees, the Phillies announced that second baseman Chase Utley has been placed on the disabled list with inflammation in his right ankle. Utley had sprained the ankle back in January, causing him to miss the start of Spring Training. Utley is having an atrocious season at the plate, hitting just .179 with a .532 OPS in 65 games. |
Utley has a $15 million club option for 2016, which will automatically vest should he reach 500 plate appearances this season. He is already around the halfway point to having that option vest, compiling 249 plate appearances so far this season.
With the type of season Utley is having, coupled with his injury history, it could mean the second baseman is on the last legs of his career.
