Villanova jumped into the national rankings this week at #14 and had their first test as a ranked team this season against Big 5 opponent Penn. The Wildcats built a big lead in the first half, and despite going a bit cold in the second half, cruised to a 77-54 win.
The Wildcats came out firing and built a big lead early against the Quakers. Villanova led 31-9 with 8 minutes remaining in the half and kept a commanding lead over the Quakers, heading to the half up 46-28.
Darrun Hilliard led the charge for the Wildcats in the first half, scoring 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. While Hilliard was hot early, Ryan Arcidiacono was ice cold, going 0 for 6 shooting in the half. With the rest of the team making shots, Arcidiacono’s struggles would make no difference, as Villanova shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, making 8 3-pointers.
Miles Jackson-Cartwright did most of the damage for the Quakers in the first half, scoring 14 points including going 4 for 7 from 3-point range. Penn would shoot just 33.3 percent from the field, as they fell into a big first half hole.
The second half was far from pretty for the Wildcats, as they didn’t score until there was 12:31 remaining in the game. Despite their struggles in the second half, Villanova had built such a huge lead in the first half that it made no difference, as they rolled to a 77-54 win.
Hilliard led all scorers in the game with 19 points, while James Bell pitched in 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Wildcats. JayVaughn Pinkston had 13 points and 7 rebounds, with 11 of those points coming from the charity stripe.
Jackson-Cartwight led the way for the Quakers in the loss, scoring 17 points, while Darien Nelson-Henry added 12 points and 7 rebounds.
The win moves the fourteenth-ranked Wildcats to 8-0 on the season, while Penn falls to 2-5. Villanova will be back in action on Saturday as they visit Saint Joseph’s. Penn will welcome Wagner to the Palestra on Saturday, as they look to avoid their third straight loss.
