Villanova Keeps Winning, Handles Marquette Attack

As other top rated teams around college basketball drop like flies (I'm looking at you Cuse), the Wildcats keep on going strong, as they easily dispatched Marquette by a score of 73-56.  In fact, the only team that has been able to defeat the Wildcats in the 2014 calendar year has been Creighton, who have the Wildcats' number somehow.

Darrun Hilliard led the Wildcat attack on Sunday afternoon, scoring 26 points on 7-11 shooting and also dishing out four assists in just 25 minutes of gameplay.  Forward JayVaughn Pinkston also helped out on offense, scoring 11 points on 3-5 shooting and grabbing 7 rebounds.  Josh Hart was able to contribute 13 points on 5-8 shooting and floor General Ryan Arcidiacono dropped eight points as well.  
As a team, the Wildcats shot 23-53 (about 44%) and went 12-29 from three point territory.  The Wildcats did well on offense, but made their mark on defense, holding Marquette to 4-15 from downtown and allowed just 18 field goals on the game.  Three point defense is incredibly important for the Wildcats, as we learned from the Creighton games.  When teams upset higher seeds in the. NCAA tournament, it's usually due to the lower seed getting hot from three point range and being able to grab a high number of offensive boards.  If  Villanova keeps up this type of three point defense against everyone they play, they should be able to play deep into March.
