
The game would remain just as tight in the second half, with a Phil Greene free throw for the Red Storm tying the game at 50 with five minutes remaining in the contest. Ryan Arcidiacono would sink a crucial three with 3:47 remaining to put the Wildcats up 53-50, as the Villanova defense clamped down, holding St. John's scoreless for 3:36 after they had tied it at 50.
St. John's would pull within one on a D'Angelo Harrison jumper with 58 seconds left, but Villanova would sink a few free throws over the final minute to narrowly defeat the Red Storm, 57-54.
Darrun Hilliard led all scorers in the game, finishing with 18 points for the Wildcats, while Ryan Arcidiacono finished with 12. Daniel Ochefu and JayVaughn Pinkston each finished with just 5 points apiece, but the big men combined for 20 rebounds in the game.
With the win, Villanova improved to 24-3 on the season and 12-2 in Big East play. The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday, when they host Butler at the Pavilion.
