Darrun Hilliard scored 18 points and Ryan Arcidiacono finished with 12 for the Wildcats, as Villanova survived a scare against St. John's, hanging on to win 57-54.
The two teams battled through the first half, as Villanova went to the locker room with a one-point lead at 28-27.
The game would remain just as tight in the second half, with a Phil Greene free throw for the Red Storm tying the game at 50 with five minutes remaining in the contest. Ryan Arcidiacono would sink a crucial three with 3:47 remaining to put the Wildcats up 53-50, as the Villanova defense clamped down, holding St. John's scoreless for 3:36 after they had tied it at 50.
St. John's would pull within one on a D'Angelo Harrison jumper with 58 seconds left, but Villanova would sink a few free throws over the final minute to narrowly defeat the Red Storm, 57-54.
