Who's Your Padre? Padres Dominate Phillies

The Phillies reverted to their pre-Ryne Sandberg style of play tonight, as they were completely dominated by the Padres. After sweeping the division-leading Braves over the weekend, the Phillies looked like a completely different team, in a bad way, as they fell by a score of 8 to 2.

Tyler Cloyd made the start for the Phillies and was absolutely horrendous to put things nicely. Cloyd was knocked around the yard to the tune of seven runs in four innings pitched. Down 4 to 0 entering the fifth, Cloyd surrendered another run before being pulled for Zach Miner with men on second and third. Miner allowed two inherited runners to score, which were charged to Cloyd's line, before allowing one run of his own in the inning he pitched.

Ethan Martin came on to toss a perfect sixth inning before handing things over to Luis Garcia. Garcia scattered one hit across two innings pitched to keep the Phillies deficit where it was. Joe Savery would come on to pitch a scoreless ninth, but these aren't the 2007-10 Phillies, so we couldn't realistically expect a comeback.

The Phillies offense was lackluster on the evening to say the least. The Phillies managed only two runs in the contest. Cody Asche gave the Phillies their first run of the game, as he smacked a solo home run in the fifth. The Phillies showed faint signs of life in the eighth, as they recorded three singles in a row with two outs, two of which were infield hits. They scored one run on a bases loaded walk by Cesar Hernandez, but that would be all for their scoring. The Phillies would put runners on second and third to start the ninth, but fail to plate any

The home run was Asche's fifth of the season, as the young third baseman continues to progress at the plate. In case you forgot, I'll remind you yet again, Cody Asche is the favorite young Phillie of the Broad Street Beat.

The Phillies will look to regroup from this embarrassing loss as they face the Padres again tomorrow. Cliff Lee will make the start for the Phillies.
