9/23/2013

Temple had this week off, which may have been a good thing, as the Owls definitely need to regroup and get on track after an 0-3 start. Villanova routed their opponent and UPenn opened finally opened their season, winning a close contest.
Villanova 35        Stony Brook 6

Villanova notched it's first victory of the season with a blowout of Stony Brook. The Wildcats used a dominant second quarter to beat down the Seawolves (whatever the hell that is). After a scoreless first quarter, Villanova's offense erupted in the second. Just 39 seconds into the quarter, Gary Underwood caught a 4-yard pass from Cody Pittman to put the Wildcats up 7-0. Midway through the second, Clay Horne would catch a 43-yard receiving touchdown from John Robertson. Robertson would run for a touchdown before the half expired to send the Wildcats into the locker room up 21-0.

Villanova would add another touchdown in the third on a 36-yard fumble return by Joe Sarnese. After the Seawolves finally scored, and had their extra point blocked, Kevin Monangai added a 5-yard rushing touchdown for Villanova for good measure, as the Wildcats cruised to their first victory of the season.

UPenn 27            Lafayette 21

UPenn finally opened its football season, as the Quakers topped Lafayette at Franklin Field. The Quakers jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first, as Ty Taylor caught a 5-yard touchdown from Billy Ragone and Connor Loftus added a 30-yard fieldgoal with the quarter winding down. Lafayette scored a touchdown in the second, but Loftus hit a 39-yard fieldgoal to send UPenn to the locker room up 13-7.

UPenn added 14 points in the third on a Mitchell King 4-yard receiving touchdown and a Spencer Kulcsar 7-yard rushing touchdown. The Quakers would hold on to win in the end by a score of 27-21 over the Leopards.

UPenn will visit Villanova next week, as both squads look for their second win of the season.
