Chase Utley’s remaining days in his career have appeared numbered since the beginning of the 2015 season due to his play. For Utley, who was hitting just .179 in 249 plate appearances before heading to the disabled list two weeks ago, the number of days left may have just decreased even more.

With Utley’s replacement, Cesar Hernandez playing well, the Phillies’ hand has been forced a bit.
On Tuesday, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. addressed the situation when asked if Utley would be the starting second baseman upon his return.

“Not for me he’s not,” Amaro told reporters. “Cesar Hernandez is our best second baseman.”

…and this situation just became more awkward than it had already been.

Hernandez, who has hit .302 in 207 plate appearances so far in 2015, has been on a tear the past three weeks, hitting more than .400 and accumulating 10 stolen bases.

Utley should still be out for a few more weeks, which could allow for Hernandez to cool off, but at this moment, it appears Utley’s career could be coming to a rapid conclusion, much like Roy Halladay’s did.
