Should We Be Happy the Phillies Were Swept By the Braves?

OK, so that may be a stupid question. But, allow me to play devil’s advocate (although some who know me well would say I’m Satan himself).

Prior to the start of their latest series with the Braves on Friday, the Phillies had gone 7-4 in their last 11 games and seemingly were still in this terrible excuse for a division we call the National League East.

That’s when the shit completely hit the fan. The Phillies lost four games in three days to the Braves. After being swept by the Braves, the Phillies have now lost eight of their past 10 games to fall 10 games below the .500 mark and eight games back in the division.

Brown's Defensive Miscue Costs Phillies in Loss to Marlins

It should've been the third out. With two outs and men on first and second in the fourth inning, Marcell Ozuna ripped a line drive directly at Domonic Brown.

Brown would break in, however, only to see the ball sail just over his glove as he leapt in an attempt to recover from his misplay.

The result would be an RBI double for Ozuna, breaking a scoreless tie. The Marlins would score two more in the frame, as Jarrod Saltalamacchia followed Ozuna's double with one of his own, on their way to a 3-2 victory over the Phillies.

Since stringing together a five-game win streak last week, the Phillies had looked dismal, dropping three consecutive games as all momentum the team had built seemingly disappeared.

Tuesday night, the Phillies got back on the right track, as they scored early and often in a 7-4 win over the Marlins.

The NL East is bad. Just how bad you ask? Well, the first place Nationals sit just three games above .500 for the season, and the Phillies, they're now just five games out.

The Phillies continue to heat up as of late, topping the Braves 5-2 on Tuesday night for their sixth win in their past eight games. But at 31-38 on the season, the Phillies have no right being that close to the division lead and as the result of a terrible division, the actions of the front office at the trade deadline could be altered.
