Francoeur Walk-Off Lifts Phillies To Sweep Over Fish

As the Trade Deadline continues to approach, Cole Hamels’ performance continues to decline. On Sunday, in what could potentially be Hamels’ final start in Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Phillies, the left-hander lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.

It was Hamels’ shortest outing since April 2011, and marked his second straight start of four innings or less.

Luckily for the Phillies’ ace, the offense was able to put together quite the outing on a steamy day at Citizens Bank Park in order to overcome Hamel’s struggles. After the Phillies entered the ninth trailing by one, Jeff Francoeur hit a two-run, walk-off home run to give the Phillies an 8-7 win and the sweep over the Marlins.

Hamels would struggle early, allowing two runs in the second, but the Phillies offense would bail him out in the bottom of the frame.

Ryan Howard led off the bottom of the second inning with his 16th home run of the season, and would be followed by five more hits in the inning, including a two-run home run by Freddy Galvis, as the Phillies put up five runs in the frame.

Hamels’ struggles would continue in the third, however, as the left-hander allowed three runs to tie the game at 5-5 and put an end to his afternoon.

The Phillies would finally break a 5-5 tie in the seventh on an RBI double by Cesar Hernandez, but some shaky pitching by the heir apparent to the closer position, Ken Giles, would allow the Marlins to take the lead in the eighth.

Francoeur would nullify all of the Phillies’ pitching struggles on the day once and for all in the ninth, however, taking a second pitch fastball deep to left center for a two-run, walk-off home run to lift the Phillies to an 8-7 win and series sweep over the Marlins.

Up Next: The Phillies will now welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to Citizens Bank Park for a three-game series beginning Monday night.
