The bullpen did its best to blow the game, but the Phillies continued to show fight they hadn't all season under interim manager Ryne Sandberg. After a blown save by Papelbon allowed the NL East leading Braves to tie things in the ninth, the Phillies walked things off in the bottom half of the frame to win 6 to 5 and seal a series win over the Braves.
Kyle Kendrick took the hill for the Phillies and was much better than he has been so far in the second half of the season. Kendrick tossed six innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight batters. Kendrick left the game in a position to win, but the bullpen made sure to change that.
Justin De Fratus tossed one and one third scoreless, before handing things over to Jake Diekman to record the final two outs of the eighth. After the Phillies plated an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame, Jonathan Papelbon came on for the ninth. With two outs, Papelbon allowed a two run shot to Andrelton Simmons to tie the game and blow the save. With the help of some late inning heroics however, Papelbon would walk away with the win, his fifth of the season, as the Phillies won on a walk off home run.
After the Braves jumped to a 2 to 0 lead in the top of the third, the Phillies responded in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game. Carlos Ruiz continued to heat up at the plate, as he singled home two runs. The Phillies would take the lead in the fifth, as Ruiz doubled home another run and Freddy Galvis singled to plate Ruiz. The Braves would take one back in the sixth, to bring the score to 4 to 3, before the Phillies tacked on another in the eighth on a Kevin Frandsen RBI single.
Papelbon surrendered a two run home run to blow the save and allow the game to be tied in the ninth, but Freddy Fantastic allowed the Phillies to lock up the series win, as he hit a walk off home run, his fifth of the season, to give the Phillies a 6 to 5 win.
In all, Galvis was 4 for 5 on the evening, with two RBIs and a run scored. Ruiz continued to give the Phillies incentive to re-sign him, as he went 2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs, a walk and a run scored.
The Phillies will close out their series with the Braves Sunday afternoon before welcoming the Padres to town on Tuesday. Cole Hamels will take the hill for the Phillies, as they attempt to sweep the team with the best record in the National League.
