The Phillies bounced back a night after being completely dominated by Jon Niese, to cruise past the Mets by a score of 6 to 2. Behind a well-rounded effort from Cole Hamels, the Phillies were able to notch another win as they continue to show improvement under Ryne Sandberg.
Hamels got the start and was solid on the way to picking up only his sixth win of the season. He allowed two runs, as he scattered nine hits across seven innings of work. Hamels also recorded eight strikeouts on the evening and contributed at the plate before handing things off to the bullpen. B.J. Rosenberg and Jake Diekman each tossed a perfect inning in relief, recording one strikeout apiece, as the Phillies moved a game ahead of the Mets in the standings (they're still 19.5 games out of first though).
After falling behind 1 to 0 in the third, the Phillies tied things up in the fourth on a Jimmy Rollins double that plated Pete Orr. The Phillies would add three more in the fifth, as John Mayberry Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Phillies the lead. Hamels then helped his own cause by singling home two runs to extend the Phillies lead to 4 to 1. The Phillies would tack on another in the sixth on Carlos Ruiz's solo home run, his fifth of the year. Kevin Frandsen would plate another run for the Phillies in the ninth as he reached on an error and that would be all she wrote, as the Phillies won 6 to 2.
One night after being shut out while only recording three hits, the Phillies showed signs of life, as they plated six runs on twelve hits.
The Phillies will close out this four game series with the Mets this afternoon. Ethan Martin will make the start, as the Phillies look to exit Citi Field with a series win.
