It’s no secret that 2015 (and 2014 and 2013) has been a miserable year for the Phillies.
On Wednesday, they entered Citizens Bank Park with an opportunity to do something they had yet to do all year, win two series in a row. Thanks to some extra inning heroics from Odubel Herrera, who entered the game in the bottom of the 10th as a pinch-hitter, the Phillies would do just that.
Herrera fouled off seven pitches in his at-bat before taking the 11th pitch he saw to left-center for a walk-off single in the Phillies’ 5-4 win over the Rays.

The Phillies would strike first in the series finale, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first before the Rays took the lead courtesy of a three run fifth. The Phillies would regain the lead in the sixth, but the Rays would be right there to respond, tying things up at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.
Jonathan Papelbon would get the call for the Phillies with the game tied in the ninth, and would waste little time getting in trouble. After walking the leadoff batter, Papelbon allowed a single to David DeJesus to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Papelbon would get James Loney to ground into a 4-3-6-3-4 double play in the next at bat, however, and then get Jake Elmore to ground out to end the inning and get out of a sticky situation.
The 10th would go much smoother for Papelbon, as he sat the Rays down in order to put the game back in the hands of the Phillies’ offense.
Domonic Brown would then lead off the bottom of the 10th with a single and move into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Carlos Ruiz. Cody Asche would then ground out for the second out of the inning.
That’s when Herrera, who hadn’t started a day after failing to run out a ground ball, received his opportunity as a pinch-hitter. The rookie would work an 11 pitch at-bat on his way to recording a walk-off single to give the Phillies a 5-4 win and a series victory over the Rays.
For his troubles, Herrera got the shit mauled out of him by Papelbon in the celebration. Enjoy the video below.
