The Phillies officially announced the addition of Jamie Moyer and Matt Stairs as color commentators. Both Moyer and Stairs were members of the 2008 Phillies squad that won the World Series, with Stairs having possibly the most memorable home run in Phillies history in the NLCS that year.
"We are thrilled to have World Series Champions Jamie Moyer and Matt Stairs join our Phillies broadcast team," Comcast SportsNet President Brian Monihan said in the press release. "These two former Phillies bring a unique perspective to the booth, and their expert analysis will add a new level of energy, insight and enjoyment to our Phillies broadcasts."
A crafty left-hander, Moyer was still pitching in the majors in 2012, at age 49. Now 51, the Souderton, PA native who went to Saint Joseph's University (The Hawk Will Never Die!), joins the broadcast team after a career that saw him win 269 games over 26 seasons, compiling a 4.25 ERA.
Stairs played 19 seasons in the big leagues, batting a career .262 with 265 home runs. The major league record holder for pinch hit home runs with 23, Stairs last played in 2011 with Washington.
I have to say, I like this move. Not only do I think they will be good broadcasters, but they are about the right age for the Phillies, and Moyer could be a spot-starter with Stairs acting as a late-inning bat off the bench if injuries occur to the roster.
