The Phillies today optioned veteran utility infielder Kevin Frandsen to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

Frandsen has 72 hours to accept his assignment or elect to become a free agent. If Frandsen does elect free agency, he will not receive the $900,000 salary from the Phillies in 2014.

The move opens up a third spot on the Phillies’ 40-man roster, which became necessary due to the rash of injuries that has struck the club’s potential bench players of late.

GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said that Frandsen is still in competition for a spot on the bench if he chooses to accept his Minor League assignment.

The 31-year-old Frandsen is a career .259 hitter in 1,015 at-bats.
