The Phillies bounced back from the thrashing they took yesterday at the hands of the Nationals to dominate the Marlins at home. Kicking off their final home stand of the season, the Phillies cruised past the Marlins by a score of 12 to 2.
Cliff Lee took the mound for the Phillies and was spectacular in the outing. Lee threw eight innings of two-run ball, striking out an impressive fourteen batters. Lee would also pitch in on offense throughout the night before handing things over to Ethan Martin for a scoreless ninth.
The Phillies got on the board in the first, as Cesar Hernandez walked to lead off the inning. Jimmy Rollins would follow that with a ground-rule double and Chase Utley would plate Hernandez on an RBI groundout.
The breakout came in the third, as the Phillies piled on six runs. Chase Utley smacked a three-run home run to right, his seventeenth of the season. The Phillies would tack on three more in the inning to give Lee a huge lead.
The Phillies added two more in the fifth after Lee tripled home a run and scored on a Hernandez single. They would put up another two runs in the sixth on Darin Ruf's fourteenth home run of the season and add one more in the seventh for good measure.
While Cesar Hernandez, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Darin Ruf each notched two hits on the night, the star of the game was definitely Cliff Lee. In addition to a stellar pitching performance, Lee went 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBIs and a run scored.
The Phillies will meet the Marlins again tomorrow night. Roy Halladay will make the start as the Phillies look to prolong collecting their 81st loss of the season.
