Less than twelve hours after dropping a marathon game in 18 innings to the D-Backs, the Phillies bounced back and coasted to a relatively easy victory by a score of 9 to 5. After using up every pitcher in last night/this morning’s game, including the scheduled starter for today, Roy Halladay was called upon to make his return earlier than anticipated.
Halladay allowed the first batter of the game to triple, and saw him score on a groundout by the second hitter. The Phillies would plate four runs in the bottom half of the inning to stake Halladay a comfortable lead. Halladay would allow another run in the second before shutting the D-Backs down. With two outs and a man on in the third, Halladay allowed a deep fly ball that would have been a home run to tie the game, but Roger Bernadina comfortably timed the ball to rob Matt Davidson of a home run. Halladay would give the Phillies the solid performance they were hoping for after an 18-inning game, going six innings while allowing only two earned runs.
Cesar Jimenez came on and tossed a scoreless frame in the seventh after the Phillies lead had grown to 9 to 2 in the sixth. J.C. Ramirez, who returned from the minors to help a depleted bullpen came on for the eighth and showed why he had been sent to Triple A. Ramirez allowed a three run home run to narrow the Phillies lead to 9 to 5. Jake Diekman would finish the game off with a scoreless ninth, as Halladay and the Phillies picked up the win.
The Phillies staked Doc a nice lead in the bottom of the first as they plated four runs. Darin Ruf singled home a run before Cody Asche doubled home two more. Kevin Frandsen would drive in one more in the inning on a groundout and the Phillies offense would continue to produce following an exhausting 7 hour game. John Mayberry Jr. would plate another two runs in the fourth, on his tenth home run of the season. The Phillies would extend their lead in the sixth with a Chase Utley pinch-hit RBI single and a Roger Bernadina double to drive home two more, as they cruised to victory.
The win gave the Phillies their second series win in a row after struggling mightily since the All Star break. It was the Phillies sixth win in their past eight games, as they continue to look rejuvenated under interim manager Ryne Sandberg.
The Phillies will now visit the Mets for a four game series. Cliff Lee will take the mound as the Phillies open the series with their division rivals.
