The Phillies continue to unload veterans, as it appears the club is finally beginning to recognize a full rebuild is needed.
On Wednesday, the Phillies sent outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Ben Lively.
The 37-year-old Byrd is coming off a season in which he hit .264 with 25 home runs and 85 RBIs for the Phillies. Byrd is scheduled to make $8 million in 2015 with an $8 million vesting option for 2016.

According to Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty, the money the Phillies sent over with Byrd will cover a significant portion of his salary.
In return, the Phillies receive a solid young pitching prospect in Ben Lively. The 22-year-old Lively put up a combined 13-7 record with a 3.04 ERA, 171 strikeouts and 1.119 WHIP in 2014 with Class A Advanced Bakersfield and Double-A Pensacola.
A fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft out of Central Florida, Lively strung together a 31 inning scoreless streak with Bakersfield and was selected to start the All-Star Futures Game before finishing up the season in Double-A.
Lively currently ranks as the #8 prospect in the Phillies' farm system.
