News broke last night early in the Phillies game that Chase Utley had agreed to a contract extension and today the club made an official announcement. Utley is now signed as a Phillie through 2015.
The veteran second baseman, who has suffered from chronic knee injuries, is having a somewhat resurgent year. Entering Wednesday's contest, Utley had played in 83 games, the same amount he did all last year. He is batting .275, with 15 home runs and 42 RBI's. The deal is a two-year contract extension, with three vesting options. The options will rely mainly on Utley's knees, as they will vest if he can manage to stay on the field.
Ruben Amaro Jr. had this to say about the extension:
"Chase epitomizes everything we expect our Phillies to be. As we've said before, we see Chase as a true Phillie for life. This contract moves us toward that end. We couldn't be more pleased."
Neither could I Ruben, neither could I.
