Phillies Fall in Martin's Debut

The Phillies dropped their third straight tonight as they fell to the Braves 6 to 4 on Curt Schilling’s Wall of Fame induction night. The Phillies continue to struggle, failing to piece together a solid effort on both the pitching and hitting side in the same night.
Ethan Martin made his major league debut, taking the loss as the Braves proved to be too much for him. Martin was solid early, allowing only one run through the first four innings of the game before the Braves solved him. In all, Martin tossed four and one-third innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Luis Garcia replaced Martin, getting the final two outs, but not before allowing an inherited runner to score, adding the sixth run to Martin’s line. Jake Diekman and Justin De Fratus followed Garcia, each tossing one and one-third inning of shutout ball respectively. Antonio Bastardo came on to get the final out in the eighth and remained in the game to toss a shutout ninth as well.

The Phillies jumped out to an early lead, courtesy of back-to-back home runs from Darin Ruf and Delmon Young in the second inning. The Braves got one run back in the third before erupting for five runs in the fifth to jump to a comfortable 6 to 2 lead. The Phillies narrowed the gap in the sixth when Chase Utley hit a solo home run, his fifteenth of the season. Cody Asche grounded out to bring home another run and get the Phillies within two but that would be all the Phillies could muster. The Phillies managed only six hits on the evening, with three of them being solo home runs. Delmon Young went 3 for 4, as he fell a triple short of the cycle, his only out coming on a blown call by the umps, which resulted in Charlie Manuel and Jimmy Rollins being ejected.

The Phillies will face off with the Braves again tomorrow at 4:05. John Lannan will face Brandon Beachy in game two of this series.

For who? My teammates. For what? To win.
